How to Measure Customer Satisfaction in Arabic and English in the UAE
Bilingual customer satisfaction research requires more than translating a questionnaire. The construct, wording, scale and response process must remain comparable across languages and customer groups.
Define what satisfaction means in this decision
Customer satisfaction may refer to one transaction, a service episode, a product or the complete relationship. State the experience, population and period. A broad satisfaction question cannot diagnose a specific operational problem.
Design the source version carefully
Write questions in plain language, use one idea per item and specify the recall period. Select response scales that match the construct. Decide whether results will be means, distributions or top-box percentages before fieldwork.
Translate meaning, not individual words
Use professional translation, independent review and cognitive testing with relevant Arabic and English speakers. Back translation can identify differences but is not enough. Terms for ease, trust, value or recommendation may carry different assumptions across contexts.
Test how respondents understand the questions
Cognitive interviews ask people to explain how they interpreted a question and chose an answer. Pilot the survey across languages, channels and important customer groups. Inspect missing answers, scale use and comments for evidence that an item is confusing or culturally inappropriate.
Establish measurement comparability
Psychometric analysis can test whether items form the intended dimensions and whether the scale behaves similarly across language groups. Without measurement invariance, a difference in scores may reflect the questionnaire rather than a difference in experience.
Design sampling and mode together
Arabic and English respondents may enter through different channels or customer populations. Record language choice, invitation method, eligibility, response and weighting. Do not attribute a channel or demographic difference to language without analysis.
Report evidence the business can act on
Present uncertainty, distributions and operational context. Link scores with journey stage, service conditions and later behaviour where appropriate. Protect confidentiality and avoid small-group reporting that could reveal respondents.
