Credit and Collections Decision Review
Credit decisions estimate whether an applicant can repay under proposed terms. Collections decisions determine which response may help an existing customer resolve arrears while protecting the institution from avoidable loss. These questions are related, but they are not interchangeable. A high predicted risk does not establish which product, assistance or collections treatment will produce the best outcome.
Marketways reviews how the decision, policy and historical data interact before assessing the model. We separate prediction from treatment effect, test performance across changing conditions and examine how human judgement and workflow authority shape the final result.
Define the decision before selecting the model
Approval, pricing, limit setting, early assistance and collections treatment require different outcomes and time horizons. One generic customer-risk score cannot answer all of them responsibly.
Marketways defines the decision, eligible population, available action and consequence of error. We also identify which employee or governed system holds authority and how a customer can obtain review.
This framing determines the relevant evidence and performance measure. It prevents a prediction developed for one policy from being reused as an unexplained decision for another.
Reconstruct how historical policy created the data
Observed repayment depends on income, obligations and economic conditions. It also depends on the amount offered, price, due date, communication and assistance available.
Marketways maps the approval, pricing and collections policies that operated during the historical period. We preserve when each policy changed and which customers received each product or treatment.
A past default is therefore interpreted within its decision context. The analysis does not treat repayment as a fixed customer trait independent of the institution's earlier choices.
Account for outcomes that the institution cannot observe
Applicants who were declined did not receive the proposed product, so their repayment under those terms is unknown. Likewise, customers routed away from a treatment do not reveal how they would have responded to it.
Marketways states this selection problem explicitly. We test performance on the population for which outcomes are observed and examine whether policy changes or experiments provide credible information about excluded groups.
Validation on approved accounts cannot establish performance for every applicant. Any extension beyond the observed population requires assumptions, evidence and bounded use.
Separate probability of default from affordability
A customer may have a low predicted default probability and still face an unaffordable payment under the proposed terms. Conversely, temporary arrears do not always indicate an enduring inability to repay.
Marketways distinguishes risk prediction from an assessment of current and prospective cash-flow burden. We connect income, obligations, product terms and relevant stress conditions without converting sensitive transaction patterns into unsupported conclusions.
The distinction affects both access and assistance. Pricing a risk does not answer whether the customer can sustain the obligation.
Use cash-flow evidence proportionately
Transaction data can reveal changing income, recurring obligations and volatility. However, the same pattern can have several explanations, and detailed transactions contain sensitive information unrelated to the decision.
Marketways defines which evidence is necessary, interpretable and proportionate. We document how material features affect the result and test whether they remain stable across customers and economic conditions.
Predictive value alone does not justify a feature that acts as an inappropriate proxy or lacks a credible relationship with the decision. The review includes fairness, privacy and the consequence of error.
Distinguish prediction from treatment effect
A risk model estimates an outcome under observed or current policy. A treatment model asks whether a particular reminder, timing, restructuring or assisted review changes repayment, cure or customer harm.
The highest-risk account will not necessarily benefit most from the most intensive treatment. Marketways uses experiments or credible causal comparisons to estimate average and heterogeneous treatment effects where the decision requires them.
Each test defines eligibility, customer protection and the outcome management intends to improve. The result supports an intervention choice rather than another ranking of existing risk.
Design collections around ability, circumstance and response
Two customers with the same arrears can require different responses. One may have overlooked a payment, another may face temporary disruption, and a third may need longer-term assistance.
Marketways combines account status with permitted evidence about circumstances and previous response. We test contact channel, timing, message and assistance options without assuming that greater pressure produces better recovery.
The treatment should improve a defined outcome, such as sustainable cure or earlier engagement. Collections activity alone does not establish success.
Keep fairness and stability beside model performance
Overall discrimination and calibration can conceal weaker results for a customer group, product or economic condition. A threshold may also create unequal error consequences even when the underlying score performs similarly.
Marketways evaluates calibration, approval or treatment rates, errors and outcomes by relevant segment. We test stability after policy, portfolio and economic changes and examine whether a feature operates as an unsuitable proxy.
Management can then decide whether to recalibrate, restrict, redesign or suspend use. Fairness review remains connected to the actual decision rather than a detached metric.
Use Agentic AI to prepare evidence within controlled authority
Credit and collections employees may need application data, account history, policy terms and customer communications before selecting a permitted action. Manual retrieval can delay assistance or produce inconsistent evidence.
An Agentic AI workflow can gather authorised records, identify missing information and prepare an eligible option for review. It can record the policy, model version, evidence and approval that supported the recommendation.
The workflow must not approve credit, change contractual terms or impose a consequential collections action outside delegated authority. Customers require a clear route for exception, explanation and review.
Evaluate the complete customer and portfolio outcome
Approval, default and cure rates are necessary but incomplete. A policy may improve short-term recovery while increasing complaints, repeat delinquency or later loss.
Marketways evaluates risk-adjusted return, sustainable cure, roll rates, reversals, hardship outcomes, complaints and subgroup differences. We also preserve employee overrides and compare revised decisions with the previous process through a controlled rollout.
The evaluation determines whether the decision improves both financial and customer outcomes under changing conditions. It does not reward a model merely for reproducing historical policy accurately.
A collections reminder illustrates the distinction
Suppose a lender sends an intensive reminder to accounts with the highest predicted delinquency. Recovery appears higher among recipients than among lower-risk accounts.
That comparison does not reveal the treatment effect because the groups had different starting risk. A randomised or credible quasi-experimental test may show that a simpler message works for some customers, while assisted contact produces a larger sustainable benefit for others.
Marketways would connect the treatment with repayment, repeat arrears and customer outcome. Management can then target the response that changes the result rather than the account that merely looks riskiest.
How Marketways reviews credit and collections decisions
Marketways maps the decision, policy and data-generation process before assessing the model. We separate risk, affordability and treatment effect, test calibration and stability, and examine how workflow use, authority and overrides affect the final outcome.
