Major decisions often reach leadership through a polished business case or recommendation. The document may be internally consistent while still beginning with the wrong question, omitting a credible alternative or using a model that supports the preferred answer. Approval discipline alone cannot correct a weak decision frame. Marketways independently examines the question, evidence, assumptions, alternatives and consequences before the client commits. This gives the accountable decision-maker a clearer basis for judgement while leaving ownership of the decision where it belongs.

What we assess
We begin with the decision itself. This includes its purpose, the choice that requires approval, the people responsible for it and the boundaries that distinguish it from related choices.
We examine whether the evidence supports the case being made. Relevant questions include the assumptions behind a conclusion, gaps or contradictions in the available information, and whether apparently separate sources genuinely provide independent support.
We also consider whether the organisation has considered credible alternatives and rival explanations. A preferred option is more useful when the business can explain why it is preferable to realistic alternatives, rather than simply why it is attractive in isolation.
Where uncertainty is material, we assess the conditions under which the case becomes less reliable or changes direction. The review can also consider whether incentives, prior commitments or the way a decision has been discussed may have narrowed challenge or distorted judgement.
Decision Assurance
Decision Assurance provides an independent examination of a consequential business decision before action is taken. It helps decision-makers establish whether the decision is clearly defined, supported by relevant evidence and resilient enough for accountable judgement.
How this helps the business
A clearer decision to own. The work separates the decision from assumptions, related choices and informal expectations that may have become entangled. This gives the accountable decision-maker a more precise basis for approval, challenge or deferral.
A stronger view of the case. We examine how the conclusion is supported and where the support is incomplete, dependent or open to a credible rival explanation. The business can focus attention on the premises that genuinely affect the decision instead of treating all information as equally persuasive.
Better visibility of conditions and exposure. The assessment shows where a proposed course is robust, where it is conditional and where uncertainty could change the conclusion. This helps leaders judge whether to proceed, seek further evidence, adjust the commitment or retain the option to reconsider.
Constructive independent challenge. An independent perspective can make disagreement more useful by connecting concerns to the decision, evidence and consequences at stake. The review makes the basis for management judgement easier to examine and explain. The decision remains with management.
How Marketways tests the decision rather than polishing the recommendation
We reconstruct the decision from its purpose, authority, alternatives, evidence and consequences. Statistical and causal claims are checked against the data-generating process and the assumptions needed for their interpretation; scenarios expose choices and outcomes excluded by the preferred case. This work may confirm the recommendation, change it or reveal that the wrong decision is being asked. The value lies in giving leadership a defensible basis for commitment before cost and consequence become difficult to reverse.
Methods and technologies that support this service
Marketways selects, combines and adapts the method mix to the business question, the available evidence and the decision the work must support.
Getting ready
Bring the decision, its timing, the commitment it creates and the papers, forecasts or recommendations supporting it. Marketways will define the exact choice under review, separate connected decisions, identify unsupported assumptions and establish the tests the recommendation must withstand.
Where this service fits
Decision Assurance sits within Business Threats. It examines the value of a decision and the weaknesses in judgement, evidence or uncertainty that could expose the business to avoidable loss.
The service may follow Market Research & Demand Assessment or Business Feasibility & Investment Appraisal when their findings are being used to support a consequential commitment. Decision Assurance does not repeat those assessments. It examines whether the resulting case, assumptions and uncertainties justify the proposed action.
Risk & Uncertainty Modelling may be relevant when the decision depends on quantified exposure, volatile outcomes or linked risks. It can provide a more developed view of the uncertainty that Decision Assurance needs to weigh, while Decision Assurance keeps the focus on the business decision and the conditions for action.
AI may change both the decision and the evidence behind it. For example, an AI-enabled proposal may create a new operating option while also relying on model outputs, automated actions or data whose limits matter to the commitment. AI & Model Risk can assess the system’s intended use, reliability and controls when that technology is central to the case. Not every assurance engagement involves AI, and assessing a decision does not itself implement or approve an AI system.
Related AI pathway
AI Evaluation & Assurance applies this decision work when the evidence, recommendation or proposed action depends materially on an AI system.
Discuss the scope
If a significant decision needs a clearer independent view, we can discuss the business objective, the decision to be made, the information available, the resources at stake and the uncertainties that matter most. Together, we can agree a scope that supports the judgement required without assuming the business has already resolved every question.
